A number of studies are underway which could lead to new treatment options for dogs (and people) with severe spinal injuries.
One of the most widely publicised is Stem Cell treatment and many people will have seen the news story about Jasper the Dachshund who regained his mobility after such treatment.
In the USA, Safari Vet Centre is one of the few clinics offering stem cell treatments for spinal injuries. Scout, in the video below, is one of their success stories. At the moment, we're not aware of this being available in the UK.
Other studies are looking at gene therapy and cell therapy. Gene therapy aims to change the disc cell metabolism so degeneration is prevented or delayed. Cell therapy aims to replace or repair damaged cells in the disc.
